8pm THE PHANTOM CARRIAGE (1921, dir. Victor Sjöström, Sweden, 107mns, 35mm)
10pm New Years Eve After Party
You might notice that tonight, the ticket price is $75/person. But here’s what it gets you:
A seat to a rare screening of Victor Sjostrom’s stunning silent film classic The Phantom Carriage. On 35mm. With a live original score by the Rob Schlaudecker Trio. If you’ve never seen this movie (which inspired Ingmar Bergman’s entire career), you’re in for A Christmas Carol level revelation. The movie tells the story of unrepentant drunk David Holm (played by the director who would later be equally magnificent in Bergman’s Wild Strawberries) who refuses to reform for either his long suffering wife and children or for dying Salvation Army Sister Edit who truly believes he can. When Holm drinks himself to death on New Year’s Eve, a former drinking buddy shows up as the driver of the Phantom Carriage and reveals that Holm must now take the position and pick up the dead for a year. His Friend shows Holm all the damage and disregard Holm has left behind him in his utter selfishness.
