Event Details
The dark and tricksy roots of Halloween (or All Hallows’ Eve, or All Saints’ Eve) go back many centuries to at least the Middle Ages: Shakespeare mentions the Christian tradition of souling where children would go door-to-door offering prayers for the dead in exchange for cross-marked “soul cakes.” But some authors trace it back much further, to the pagan festival of Samhain (pronounced “sa-win”) which celebrated the end of harvest season and the beginning of winter. One of the eight annual solar festivals – along with the solstices and equinoxes, Imbolc (the start of Spring), Beltane (May Day) and Lughnasa (the start of Harvest season) – it was a time of spirits, fairies and demons, where the boundaries became blurred between Life and Death, the Natural and the Supernatural.
Michael J. Pearce is a dynamic writer, exhibit curator, and art critic. He is an active and enthusiastic participant in the conversation about 21st century art and its roots, especially contemporary imaginative realism. He has published dozens of articles about art and artists, and wrote a book about art and neuroscience titled Art in the Age of Emergence. He is a champion of art that emerges from popular culture and shapes the spirit of the age. His book Elephant - the story of the invention of the American avant-garde - will be published later this year. He is Professor of Art at California Lutheran University.
